Royole was the first manufacturer with a foldable on the market: the Royole FlexPai from 2018. During Display Week, they now show a first flexible micro LED display. Micro LED is a display technology that is still quite fresh and combines the advantages of LCD and OLED — without the respective disadvantages. However, the production is still very expensive, so micro LEDs are the exception for private customers.

According to Royole, the result is not only rollable and foldable, but can also be pulled, twisted and otherwise deformed. Theoretically, screens with this kind of flexibility would also be very interesting for wearables, for example. But Royole also sees areas of application in the health sector or in public transport, for example.

According to the manufacturer, Royole’s flexible micro-LED display can be extended to 130%, can be bent by 40% and achieves pixel densities of up to 120 ppi. In addition, a transparency of up to 70 % can be achieved with the screens. This would make them suitable for use in windows or eyeglasses, for example.

It should be borne in mind that mass production is not yet possible and the flexible micro-LED screens are certainly still very expensive at present. However, it will be exciting to see where the journey will take us.
